LO2 Task 2: Job Role in a chosen sector (P4)

P4:

I have chosen to investigate the job role of Editorial photographer, for this job role i need skills such as:
-Practical and technical skills.

I will need practical and technical skills because i need to know how to work a cameras in order to take the photographs which is important as that is what I am hired to do. I also need the technical skills to change settings on the camera in order to manipulate it into what I want, for example to capture movement I may change the shutter speed. I need to know how to manipulate the image to create a desired effect/meaning for the photograph. To take my photographs I would use a DLSR camera, this is to help my photographs come out the best quality and o allow me to manipulate them (such as shutter speed) ignorer to create the desired meaning or effect, I would also have to use a range of lenses, I may use lenses such as wide angle or macro in order to create meaning. I would use a macro lens for an extreme zoom and focusing on an object such as if I was shooting for a jewery company they may want extreme close ups of the products, I would use a macro lens for this. I may be asked to shoot of an outdoor fashion shoot, for this I may use a wide lens in order get both the model and scenery in the shot.

Specific industry Knowledge:
For every shoot i will have to be aware of the health and safety risks for me and my crew, i will need to know how to create a risk assesment. For a photoshoot i will need to know about risks such as loose wires, i will need to ensure all wires are taped down before the shoot starts to make sure no one trips over them. Another risk is the hot studio lights, this is becuase if they overheat the bulbs can explode or be very hot to move. i will need to give regular breaks and allow them to cool down beefore moving them. Other industry knowledge i need to know is copyright and release forms, both are highly important. Copyright is important as i need ensure my photographs are not used without my permission and also to ensure i do not use others photographs without permission. Release forms for both models and locations are important as i need to ensure i have full permission for both.

Communication skills:
As an editoiral photographer i need to be good with both verbal and written communication skills. This is becuase i need to be good at giving instructions during the shoot, as i need to direct the model to give the desired effect for the shoot. i need written communication skills as i will need to full out the revelant forms such as call sheet and release/consent forms.

Organisation:

I need this skill when organising photoshoots as i would need to ensure all the equipment, crew and props are there when i want to shoot. This still can also be used after production as i would need to organise my photographs into the good and bad ones. I will need to be organised in pre-production as i will need to organise paperwork such as location recce, release forms, risk assesments or planning the photoshoot in general (models/location/crew). If i do not pre-plan then the photoshoot them the desired meaning could be lost by not the right location, people or equipment.

Creativity:

I will need creativity skills to come up with diverse effects and ideas to create meaning in my photographs. Neing an editoiral photorapher i need to come up with unique ideas and think outside the box to stand out, this is important as i will need to build a diverse portfolio in order to be hired. I will also need creative skills to edit my photographs in unique was to make them different such as posterise filter/ grain/ double exposure. for example if i was doing a photoshoot for a campaign for mental health i might use double exposer to show the different range of emotional states people with mental health go through everyday, this is important as it would cause an impact which is what the client would want form the campaign.

Problem solving:

As an editorial photogrpaher i will be working for clients, for this is will need top ensure to meet all client requirements as otherwise they may not pay me or hire me again, in order to ensure i do i may need to make last minute changes or think on my feet to meet these requirements. Problems i may need to solve is missing documents, to over come this i will make copies of all documents needed for each shoot. Another problem is models not showing up, i will solve this by again having back up models on stand by which will make sure that the shoot can still carry on.

Working as part of a team:

This is important as i would have to work around a lot of crew such as lighting, makeup, costume in order to get the desired effect from my photography, i also need to be able to direct the model so they portray what i want. i would need to use a direct mode of address to make sure the model knows how to pose and what i want from this photoshoot so they can convay this.

I need to develop my technical skills because i need to be able use different software to edit my photograph, i want to  develop skills in Photoshop, Adobe Bridge, Lightroom. I also want to develop my creativity by experimenting with different types of photography inorder to perfect my photography skills and meaning.

Wider responsibilities needed for this is that i would need to direct a crew and model so that my photograph has a certain meaning in them and so it is suitable for the purpose of the photograph. The different models/ equiptment/ location can effect the prupose of the photograph such as magazine, advertisment, portfolio.
